Orange staining, black slime in the toilet tank, sulfur smell at the hot tap — these are iron and hydrogen sulfide, and a standard softener alone won't hold up against them. We test first, then match the media to what's actually in your water. Most well jobs run $2,500–$3,500.

What the symptom usually means
Describe it on the phone; we'll tell you what we expect to find and what we'd test for.
Tubs, toilets, laundry. Dissolved (clear-water) iron that oxidizes once it hits air.
Hydrogen sulfide gas. Worse at the hot tap if it's coming from the water heater, everywhere if it's the well.
Manganese, or iron bacteria in the toilet tank. Different fix from plain iron.
Hill Country wells are typically hard on top of the iron. Both get handled, in the right order.
A softener sold for an iron problem is a softener that fails in two years.
Iron fouls resin. If a company skips the test and sells you the softener anyway, you'll be calling for repair before the warranty question even comes up. We'd rather put the right media in front of it the first time — the 10% cross-link resin and Clack valve are the same as every unit we install.
